Circulation

How to obtain a library card
Stop by your nearest library with some form of ID that shows your Sussex County address and fill out the registration form. Or,  print out a copy of the form HERE and bring it in to your nearest library.

Non-Sussex County Residents
red boxIf you live in northern New Jersey, your home library may participate in the Open Borrowing program. Go to your home library and ask for an Open Borrowing sticker. This will allow you to check out books in Sussex County for free.
orange boxIf you live outside of Sussex County, but work inside Sussex County, you are eligible for a free Sussex County Library card.
yellow boxIf your library does not participate in Open Borrowing and you do not work in the county, you may purchase a Guest Borrower card for $25.00 per year.
PLEASE NOTE: Each of these categories have slightly limited privileges. Please ask for details when applying for a card.

You may use your library card to check out materials at any branch in the System.

Materials that may not circulate:  reference, some Main Library government documents.

Lost Card
If you lose your library card, contact the library immediately so that it may be blocked from further use.  Then go to any branch to apply for a replacement card.  The replacement card fee is $1.00.

Returning books
All circulating materials may be returned to any branch or System bookdrop.

Renewing books
Materials cannot be renewed online the day they are due. You will need to call the library to get them renewed.
If other patrons have a request on an item that is checked out, the item cannot be renewed and will need to be returned to the library by the due date.

Open Borrowing
Patrons may use their cards to check out books and in many cases A/V material from hundreds of libraries across northern New Jersey.  Click here for details.

Reference

Reference Service is provided in all libraries in the Sussex County Library System.  Staff may be contacted by phone or via e-mail.  Reference staff are available to assist with questions as well as initial training on the use of the Library System's databases.  Reference Librarians may also serve as proctors.  Please review the guidelines prior to making a proctoring request.

JAWS software for the Blind and Vision Impaired
JAWS software is available at the Main Library and at the Dennis Branch in Newton. If you have used the software in the past, you may simply go to the library and the staff will set up the appropriate computer. If you have not used the software previously, you will want to fill out the attached form or call 877/447-6500 ext. 227 to sign up for a class.

Notary Public

Dennis Branch has a sworn notary public. Please call for an appointment - 973-383-4810.

Proctoring of Exams

Proctoring is available at the Main Library during normal business hours as long as a librarian is on duty.

It is the responsibility of the student to:

Literacy Information

The Literacy Volunteers of Sussex County provide tutoring for both basic literacy as well as for ESL (English as a Second Language). They can be contacted at 973-300-9444. They provide tutoring throughout the County as well as at several of the County Libraries.

Sussex-Wantage, Louise Childs, and the Main Libraries have LVA computers with the Rosetta Stone English language software. The program helps learners improve their English skills in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Anyone is welcome to use the Rosetta Stone software after signing in at the circulation or reference desk.
