October 1, 2007
Patrons can now register for a library card online. Thanks to a new service called GALCO (Get a Library Card Online) provided by the New Jersey State Library, patrons complete an online registration for, staff at SCLS's Main Library access the information on a NJSL database, and send a card and library information to the new patron. All the new patron has to do is provide identification the first time they come in to any SCLS library to check out materials for the first time.

Thanks to the hard work of our summer librarian, Debby Sparnon, the entire KidsZone has been expanded and updated. The Just For Teens webpage has also been created. Take a look and enjoy!

Construction begins on the amphitheatre at the Sussex Wantage Branch Library. The project is funded by the Friends of the Library using a donation from the estate of Agnes Philblad. When finished, the amphitheatre will be used for concerts, theatre productions and children's programs. Click HERE to see photos as construction progresses.

In a cooperative project with the local Literacy Volunteers of America, 3 computers using the Rosetta Stone software have been installed for use by LVA students and members of the public who are interested in improving their English language reading, writing and speaking skills.  The computers are in the Louise Childs Branch, Sussex-Wantage Branch and the Main Library.

The lobby of the Main Library has been refurbished with new shelving to display new books from both the adult and children's collections, and the Local History area has been expanded with additional seating.

Wireless access is now available in all 6 Sussex County libraries - Dennis Branch, Dorothy Henry Branch, Franklin Branch, Louise Childs Branch, Main Library, and Sussex-Wantage branch.

There are three new exciting services being offered by the Sussex County Library System. 

Open Borrowing
Open Borrowing is a reciprocal borrowing program for library patrons to borrow in-person from among more than 150 public libraries in northern New Jersey.  Any resident with a valid library card from any participating Open Borrowing library is eligible for in-person borrowing. A green Open Borrowing sticker affixed to a library card gives a library patron borrowing privileges at all participating libraries.  For more information, click here.
Downloadable Audiobooks
Do you have an MP3 player or a computer at home with speakers?   Do you have a long commute?  Are you taking a road trip or spend a lot of time on exercise equipment.  Listen to a great audiobook to pass the time.  Click here for detailed instructions.
Wireless Internet Access
Wireless access to the internet is now available at the Louise Childs Branch Library in Hopatcong.

After many years on an outdated library automation system, the Sussex County Library System has moved to Horizon.  Over the coming months, patrons will see a variety of enhanced services.

The Sussex County Library System has begun a Reciprocal Borrowing Program with the Warren County Library System and Sparta Public Library.

More new databases!  Thanks to the New Jersey Knowledge Initiative, two more databases are available to Sussex County Patrons:

Academic Search Premier
This the world's largest scholarly, multi-disciplinary full text database containing full text for more than 4,500 publications, including more than 3,600 peer-reviewed publications. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for all 8,025 journals in the collection. This collection offers information in nearly every area of academic study including: computer sciences, engineering, physics, chemistry, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, ethnic studies, and many more.
Business Source Premier
Full text for nearly 8,350 scholarly business journals and other sources. Coverage includes virtually all subject areas related to business. This database provides full text (PDF) for more than 350 of the top scholarly journals dating as far back as 1922.

Two new pages have been added to the website to assist patrons seeking Employment or Education information.

Try out Columbia-Granger's World of Poetry.  Can't remember a poem, have a student doing a project on poetry? The World of Poetry lets you:

•find poems by author, title, words in poem
•read a poet's biography , or
•commentaries on poems and poets by scholars

•find poems for speeches, reports, term papers, 
•refresh the memory on well loved poems.

The Sussex County Library System has a new catalog!  The new catalog features a graphical interface with enhanced features including:

  • new search options

  • book cover images, summaries and reviews of books

  • additional booklists

  • detailed patron information

  • the ability to create your own booklists and save them

  • the ability to format a booklist in MLA or Chicago Manual of Style for use in bibliographies for research papers

The Sussex County Library System has purchased access to yet another new database - Ancestry.com!  Ancestry.com hosts the largest collection of family history records on the web.  Learn details about your family's lives and build a family tree online.

The Franklin Branch will have EXTENDED hours beginning October 1, 2004.  Their new hours will be:

Mon., Wed., Fri.  9 a.m.-5 p.m.   
Tues., Thur.  9 a.m.-8:30 p.m.   
Sat.  9 a.m.-1 p.m.

The Sussex County Library System has purchased access to a new database - the Literature Resource Center.  This database provides access to biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of authors from every age and literary discipline. The Literature Resource Center covers more than 120,000 novelists, poets, essayists, journalists, and other writers, with in-depth coverage of 2,500 of the most-studied authors.

The Sussex County Library staff were sorry to say good-bye to two long-time staff members who decided to retire.  The retirees are Pat Tauriello, the secretary to the Library System's director, who has been with the Library for 26 years, and May Chik who after 25 years of service in the Technical Services Department, retired at the age of 81.  Both will by greatly missed.

The Franklin Branch will be CLOSED Monday, May 17th to Wednesday, May 19th in order to install new carpeting.

The Main Library now provides access in its Law Room to the New Jersey Primary Law Library database, provided by Westlaw.  This database includes New Jersey cases, annotate statutes, court rules and administrative law, along with U.S. Supreme Court, Third Circuit and New Jersey Federal District Court cases,  the United States Code Annotated and much more. 

March 20, 2004
!!The Sussex County Library has received a grant for $18,186 from the New Jersey State Library!!  The grant will be used to purchase books, DVDs, and videos.  The material is intended for those individuals in the low-economic sphere.  The books are being housed at the Main Library, the Sussex-Wantage Branch, and the Dennis Memorial Branch.  Any patron with a library card may borrow these materials.

The Sussex County Library System has purchased access to both the current New York Times and the historic New York Times.  The current version covers from 1999 to present day (with a small lag for getting the files uploaded) and the historic version covers from the first issue published in 1851 to 1999.  The current version is available both in SCLS libraries as well as from home while access to the historic papers is limited to any one of the SCLS libraries.

The library has obtained another new database called Prices4Antiques.  It is one of the web's best sources for learning about and valuing antiques, collectibles and fine art.

The Sussex-Wantage branch on Bank St. is Sussex will be closing as of 1:00p.m. on Sat. Aug. 16 as staff prepare for the move to the new building just south of the Sussex airport.  Take a look at the Press Release providing further information on the closing and a map of the new building.

A new database has been added to the website.  It is called CountryWatch and for each country, provides up-to-date statistics, news, and maps as well as political, economic, investment, environmental and social overviews.

The E. Louise Childs Memorial Branch of the Sussex County Library will reduce its hours due to a lighting project set to begin on Tuesday June 3rd.  The temporary hours for the library will be: Monday through Friday 9:00am to 3:00pm and Saturday 9:00am to 1:00pm.

The target date for completion of the lighting project is June 19th.  The library will resume its normal schedule as soon as the project is completed.  The library is located at 21 Sparta Road in Hopatcong.  Please call 973-770-1000 with questions.
