If we do not have the book, video, audiobook, music cd or magazine article that you want, we may be able to locate and borrow it from another library through a sharing program called "Interlibrary Loan" or ILL. We use a service called JerseyCat to request materials from other libraries throughout the State of New Jersey. The JerseyCat catalog includes the collections of almost all of New Jersey's public libraries as well as many colleges, universities and schools. If a title cannot be obtained from one of the JerseyCat libraries, the Interlibrary Loan staff will attempt, for a fee, to obtain the title from an out-of-state library.
Our librarians can help identify the exact citation, whether the item is a book, a journal article, or a piece of audiovisual material. Do not hesitate to ask a librarian to help with a citation. What materials may be borrowed through ILL?
The Library can request all formats that we are willing to loan - books, videos, audiobooks, music cds, DVDs, magazine articles, kits and more. Materials that cannot be requested include new titles that have been published in the last six months, videogames, and all electronic formats such as downloadable ebooks and audiobooks or electronic articles from databases.
Who may use the ILL service?
Any patron in good standing that is a resident in Sussex County exclusive of Sparta.
How long will it take to receive the item?
Turn-around time can vary greatly depending on a variety of factors including the availability of any specific item, the distance of the lending library, etc. The average turnaround time is between two and three weeks.
How long may I keep the item?
The due date is set by the lending library so can be quite varied. There will be a book band on the item showing the due date. It is extremely important to keep the book band on the item so it identifies the item as Interlibrary Loan and is properly processed upon its return.
May I renew the item?
We can ask the lending library to renew an item. It is important to ask for the renewal before the due date. The lending library will get back withn a few days with a yes or no. If they agree to the renewal, they will provide the new due date. If they say no, the item must be returned by the original due date.
How many items can I request at a time?
We can process up to five requests at a time and ask that patrons limit the number of requests in JerseyCat to 10 at a time.
What if I lose an Interlibrary Loan item?
The lending library will send us a replacement bill. That price must be honored and paid by you. Once the replacement fee has been paid, you may resume using the Interlibrary Loan service, but if there is a pattern of late returns or another item is lost, Interlibrary Loan privileges will be permanently recinded.
What if I can't find what I want in JerseyCat, or if the copies in JerseyCat can't be loaned?
If your request cannot be filled by a JerseyCat participating library, you will be contacted to see if you wish to obtain the item from an out-of-state library with a $10.00 shipping charge per item.
- If your request cannot be filled via JerseyCat, you will be contacted to determine if you wish to request an out-of-state InterLibrary Loan.
- Staff will verify the availability of your request.
- You will need to pay $10.00 for each request. You will receive a printout of your requested material with a note verifying your $10.00 per item payment. This fee is for shipping charges only.
- The library will send the request to the lending library. Every attempt will be made to obtain the material from a library with no added charge.
- Should the only available copy of the requested item have additional charges, you will be contacted. If you choose not to pay the additional charge, or if for some reason, the lending libraries are unable to send the material, you will be contacted by your library to arrange for the money to be reimbursed to you.
- Expect an average of a three to six week delivery date.
NOTE: There is no charge for photocopy requests unless the lending library charges a processing fee.
